ARCHIVED - Calpe plans to convert municipal plots of land into allotments
The Town Hall in the Marina Alta, Alicante province, intends to create "ecological urban gardens" and make them available to the public
Calpe Town Hall has set the wheels in motion to convert municipal plots of land in the town into allotments for public use.
Up to 40 'urban gardens' will be created on a 2,648m2 site of public plots between the road which runs parallel to the Pou Roig ravine, and the road behind Silene nursery school in the Cocó green zone.
In addition, the site will have common areas offering storage huts, toilets, recreation areas, and a composting site.
"The aim of this initiative is to encourage citizen participation and social interaction, to offer an area of the municipality for leisure and agricultural cultivation to promote healthy eating and to generate alternative outdoor leisure. There are also plans to reserve plots of urban garden land for the municipality's educational centres," explained Calpe Town Hall.
A new ordinance draft on public land use establishes that the allocation of plots will be "approved by mayoral decree and published on the municipal website", and anybody interested in an allotment must first submit an application at OAc@ajcalp.es. Successful applicants will be selected randomly.
The ordinance also states that allotment holders must comply with organic cultivation techniques and methods, and prohibits the use of "artificial plant protection products" and chemical fertilisers.
There will be a public consultation of the ordinance for the operation of urban gardens, exhibited at the Town Hall, and the public can make contributions and suggestions at calpe.es before November 11.
