ARCHIVED - Business owners protest in Murcia over lack of Christmas lights
Authorities in Murcia have been heavily criticised for the delay in erecting the Yuletide decorations
Business owners in the city of Murcia will take to the streets on Thursday evening, December 2, in a show of solidarity against the local council, who they believe have let the city down by failing to erect the iconic Christmas lights and decorations. Earlier this week, the city council announced that the giant tree which usually graces the Plaza Circular will not put in an appearance this year, a decision that many believe is as much down to lack of organisation as a desire to avoid congregating crowds.
The Municipal Federation of Commerce (Femuac) has called on all merchant associations to meet in the Plaza de La Glorieta at 8pm to highlight “the discomfort of municipal commerce in the face of the unfortunate situation that is being generated in our municipality in reference to Christmas lighting."
Femuac representatives have slammed the municipal government for failing to install a single light in the city or any of the neighbouring districts with Christmas just around the corner, and have highlighted that the spectacle is invaluable to local businesses in every sector at this time of year, as it draws people into Murcia.
In a statement, Femuac pointed out that Murcia is the seventh largest municipality in Spain, and has called on the authorities to remedy the situation immediately and erect the Christmas lighting, “since in all the great capitals of our country they are already up".
