ARCHIVED - Brit tourist arrested after high-speed police chase in Alicante
The "reckless" motorist endangered lives as he sped through residential neighbourhoods, pursued by police in Gran Alacant on the Costa Blanca
A British tourist has been caught and handcuffed after careering through several residential neighbourhoods in Gran Alacant at more than 100km/ph, whilst filming his "reckless" antics on a mobile phone, forcing a lengthy high-speed police chase.
Concerned residents began calling police around 9.30pm on Monday October 18, reporting a car "racing through the streets", and when Santa Pola Local Police arrived at Gran Alcant dog park, they soon discovered the car "travelling around the residential area at a disproportionate speed".
Officers called in for back up, and a patrol spotted the driver in a supermarket car park, but as soon as he realised the game was up, the Brit allegedly drove straight towards the police car, almost ramming it, and sped off.
This led to a high-speed chase through several housing estates, "endangering the lives of residents", claim police, before the motorists jumped out of the rented vehicle in Calle Crete, and made a run for it across open ground on foot.
Seven police patrols then set up a search operation and, following a tip-off from a neighbour who had apparently seen the Brit driving recklessly and at speed the previous evening, found out that the suspect was staying in a tourist rental flat with a group of friends nearby.
When the holidaymaker returned to his apartment an hour later, police were ready and waiting. He was arrested and charged with reckless driving endangering lives and serious disobedience of law enforcement officers.
He will appear before the courts in Alicante this week, and the car he was driving has been seized and taken to the municipal car pound.
