ARCHIVED - Brit arrested in Alicante after trying to run over police officers in stolen car
The driver was then involved in a high-speed police chase from Elche to Aspe in the Baix Vinalopo area of Alicante province
The National Police have arrested a British man in Aspe following a "spectacular" 15km high-speed chase that began in the Los Palmerales neighbourhood in Elche, involving several patrol cars.
The events unfolded just after midnight on Wednesday October 20, when a vehicle approached a routine police control in the middle of the residential area of the town.
On spotting the police, the driver immediately turned around and began to drive off in the opposite direction.
Another patrol nearby attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the driver allegedly continued speeding towards the police and officers were forced to jump out of the way to avoid being run over.
A check of the registration confirmed the car was stolen, and a swift pursuit involving five police vehicles ensued, only ending when the Brit was finally stopped in Aspe, in unclear circumstances, and arrested.
No further details have been disclosed, but police sources have confirmed the driver has no previous convictions.
Earlier in the week, a British tourist was involved in a high-speed police chase, endangering lives as he sped through residential neighbourhoods in Gran Alacant before being arrested on Monday night, October 18.
