ARCHIVED - Botellon street drinking sessions rage on across Alicante province
Police in Torrevieja break up party of more than 1,000 young people at beach in the Vega Baja.
Despite continued warnings from the Valencian regional government, and the threat of fines of up to €30,000, illegal botellon drinking sessions raged on across Alicante province at the weekend.
In less than 36 hours, three massive gatherings of young people were broken up by police Torrevieja.
Late Friday night, the National Police dispersed a gathering of about 1,000 young people partying at the Natural Pools in the Paseo Juan Aparicio, and just 24 hours later, a second botellon of around 400 revellers was reported at the same location.
Meanwhile, at around 2.15 am on Sunday morning, officers were busy breaking up a third botellon of 200 youths in the Dique Levante of Puerto Marina Salinas. According to the Guardai Civil, there "were no serious incidents" but 23 people were reported and face fines.
In the Marina Alta region, police dealt with three different illegal botellones in Moraira at the weekend.
Shortly before, at 1.30am on Sunday morning, the Guardia Civil received a tip off about a gathering of 120 young people drinking and playing music on L'Ampolla beach, in Moraira, and just over an hour later, at about 2.45am, colleagues were forced to deal with a second 80-strong party at Moraira's El Portet beach.
In a busy night, the Local Police were deployed back to L'Ampolla to break up a third botellon of around 50 young revellers.
As illegal drinking sessions continued across the province, two Guardia Civil patrols shut down a house party at a property in Partida Paratella, Benissa, at around 3am, where up to 150 people were sent home and the owner fined.
However, it turned out to be a "relatively quiet" weekend in the province of Valencia, with a total of 171 sanctions imposed for non-compliance with nighttime mobility restrictions.
