ARCHIVED - Booster Covid jabs for over 70s in Valencia region from October 25
The third dose will be administered in Alicante and the rest of the region at the same time as the flu vaccine
Over 70-year-olds in the Valencia region, including Alicante province, will be offered a third Covid-19 booster jab from October 25, which will be administered at the same time as the flu vaccine.
According to the Regional Health Department, the inoculations will be carried out simultaneously to “increase protection of the most vulnerable people” as it has been shown that “age is the main risk factor”.
The move follows an agreement between Spain’s Public Health Commission and the Ministry of Health, in which all the autonomous communities are represented, on Tuesday October 5 – 24 hours after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the administration of the third dose of the Pfizer vaccine in adults.
This third vaccine against coronavirus will be injected six months after having received the second vaccine, and the over 70s age group will be followed by the 65 to 70-year-olds.
More than four million people in the Valencia region have now received one dose of the vaccine and almost as many are fully immunised.
Since the end of September, the Regional Ministry of Health has been administering booster jabs to residents of elderly care homes, people with ‘severe immunosuppression’, transplant patients and people being treated with anti-CD20 drugs.
However, not all autonomus communities are in favour of the third jab. The Madrid government has rejected the booster vaccine for the moment, claiming “there is no scientific evidence to administer the booster dose”.
