ARCHIVED - Boost for Benidorm as shops are permitted to open on Sundays and holidays
Benidorm and other towns on the Costa Blanca of Alicante province, have been hit hard by the pandemic.
Shops in Benidorm on the Costa Blanca will be able to open on Sundays and holidays from mid-June to January 5, 2022, following an announcement by the Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labour, which has declared Benidorm a 'Long-term High Tourist Influence Area'.
Big stores in the popular resort which have been hit hard by the pandemic will be given more 'commercial freedom' beyond the summer months to allow them to compete with neighbouring municipalities.
And as a result, large commercial businesses of more than 300 sqm will be able to trade on Sundays and holidays until the new year.
Until now, these shops could only take advantage of extended opening hours over the Easter period and on Sundays for three months of the summer.
Benidorm Merchants Association (AICO) has been calling for a change in the legislation for the last few months, arguing that "there is so little influx of tourists, the measure is necessary to save businesses".
"We want buyers to stay in Benidorm," stressed AICO president Raúl Parra, claiming that because large stores were closed on Sundays for much of the year, shoppers were spending their money in neighbouring Finestrat or Alfaz del Pi.
The legislation will remain in place for at least the next four years.
