ARCHIVED - Bomb scare in Murcia city
An unattended bag caused chaos in a Murcia shop
The police were called to a shop in the Atalayas area of Murcia city on Wednesday afternoon, September 22, after staff contacted the emergency services about a suspicious piece of luggage.
Officers from the National Police arrived at the shop, Hiper Atalayas, and evacuated customers and staff members and the bomb squad (Technicians Specialised in the Deactivation of Explosive Devices, TEDAX), canine unit and Citizens Security services were all called to the scene as well.
After carefully opening the abandoned bag, officers found what appeared to be a jerrycan which had been sawed in half. This modification is typically carried out in order to use jerrycans or large water bottles as homemade BBQs and the police ruled out any danger to the public. Police have been unable to link anyone to the bag so far.
This bomb scare comes after the national authorities began investigating possible terrorist links to an incident in Torre Pacheco (Murcia) on September 17, in which a man was killed after a car crashed into a restaurant terrace.
