ARCHIVED - Big step forward in connecting Alicante and Murcia desalination plants
The CHS plans to connect the water plants located in Torrevieja and Águilas
A major step has been taken this week to connect the two large desalination plants of Torrevieja in Alicante and Águilas, and in turn link them with the irrigation and supply infrastructure of the Tajo-Segura.
The preliminary works plan has been published by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) on September 24 and will be available to members of the public to consult for 30 days in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
The ambitious project, which has been given the go-ahead right before what experts predict will be an unseasonably dry and warm autumn, will facilitate the flow of 43.26 cubic hectometres from the La Pedresa reservoir in Torrevieja to the Ojós weir, and a further 17.13 to the Algeciras reservoir.
Another pipeline will be constructed from the Cerro Colorado reservoir, an action which is associated with the Águilas plant.
These jobs will finally complete the ongoing work to the Totana section of the pipeline, which runs from the Cerro Colorado between intake 26 of the Totana Irrigation Community and the future intake of the Alhama Irrigation Community.
The preliminary project also involves the creation of an intake and pumping pipe from the La Pedrera Reservoir, both flowing towards the Ojós weir and towards the Rambla de Algeciras reservoir.
The important project is part of MITECO’s long-term plans to ensure there is a consistent supply of water guaranteed to both agricultural and domestic consumers in the Region of Murcia.
