ARCHIVED - Benidorm Mayor launches Royal British Legion Spain North District Poppy Appeal 2022
Representatives from the British Embassy in UK and Spain joined hundreds of veterans at the ceremony in the Marina Baixa resort
The official launch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) Spain North District Poppy Appeal 2022 was held in Benidorm on Saturday October 15 with a Parade of Standards led by the Torrevieja Popes and Drums.
Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez, was joined by representatives of the RBL in Spain, the British Defence Attaché Captain Stephen McGlory, and hundreds of veterans who had travelled from across Spain to be at the ceremony, which has been held in the popular Costa Blanca coastal resort since 2013.
The traditional parade also involved the 'Chelsea Pensioners', pensioner soldiers of the Royal Hospital of Chelsea, and was followed by the official launch in Avenida Ametlla de Mar.
During his speech, the mayor spoke of how proud he was to be involved in the fundraising campaign and the continued growth in the Poppy Appeal which he said is "testimony to the hard work" of volunteers and the "extraordinary generosity" of the public.
He highlighted the town's "ties of friendship with the people from the UK" and added: "We regard our involvement in this launch to be very much an honour... as we remember all those who have given their lives for their country".
Captain Stephen McGlory, defence Attaché at the British Embassy, spoke of what Remembrance means to him as a serving officer, and National Vice Chair of the Royal British Legion, Lynda Atkins, detailed the changes that have taken place in the Royal British Legion in the 101 years since it was formed. She assured that despite the changes, the basic aims remain the same; to promote aid to those who served in the forces and their families and dependents.
After the Last Post, Reveille played by District bugler Mark Benton, two minutes silence and the speeches, the streets were filled with the sounds of National Anthems of Spain and the UK, played by the Concert Band.
There are Appeal collection points in many areas across Spain, but for those who wish to donate, but are unable to do so in person, donations can be made at: https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/poppy-appeal.
All the money raised in Spain will be spent locally supporting beneficiaries. The RBL is a non-profit organisation that with the celebration of the 'Poppy Appeal' distributes 25 million fabric poppies, mostly made by people with functional diversity, and whose benefits in the form of donations go to help ex-military personnel and their families as a result of war conflicts.
It has more than 700,000 members worldwide, of which there are about 4,000 in Spain and more than 1,000 in Alicante province.
