ARCHIVED - Benidorm launches low emissions project as part of drive to cut car use
The resort in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, also plans to radically overhaul its public transport network
Benidorm Council has relaunched a project to reduce polluting emissions produced by road traffic in an attempt to secure 3.1 million euros from the central government.
The aim is to create low emissions zone that would cover an area of 35 hectares divided into three sub-zones: Levante; Poniente; and the town centre.
Here, the local authority wants to regulate and restrict vehicle access, circulation and parking to slash polluting emissions as part of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
The project is in addition to a new, free park-and-ride service, launched as part of European Mobility Week (September 16 to 22) to promote sustainable mobility.
The council has also announced this week, that following an agreement with the concessionary bus company, Avanza, a “dynamic public transport information system” will be implemented with the installation of LED screens at the main bus stops, which will provide users with real-time service information, such as the duration of the route, and arrival time of the next bus, etc.
In total, 37 of these new new ‘infobuses’ are going to be placed at the most used stops in the town, and seven new bus shelters will also installed.
In addition, 11 LED screens will be put up across the resort to “not only provide public transport details, but also as a communication channel between the council and citizens, offering municipal information of interest with the ability to play videos in high quality,” explained the local authority.
The screens will be 48-inch, ultra-panoramic and will be connected via fiber optics.
As part of Benidorm’s modernisation of its public transport network, various improvements will be made at the most frequented bus stops, including those in Calle Langreo and Avenida del Mediterráneo, and a new stop will be installed in Calle Barca del Bou next to the future Salt de L’Aigua park-and-ride car park.
The improvements will include the expansion of waiting areas “for greater comfort and safety” and the installation of street furniture. The pavement will also be replaced with a tactile material and several pipelines will be replaced.
Finally, pedestrian protection zones will be expanded and accessible curbs will be installed for access by people with reduced mobility.
