ARCHIVED - Benidorm gets more rain in one day than it normally has in the whole of October
Unprecedented downpours in the Marina Baixa town left almost 26 litres/m2 in 24 hours, more than the average for the whole month
Alicante and the rest of the Valencian Community had a pretty cloudy Sunday yesterday with some scattered showers, but in general nothing to write home about unless you were in Benidorm.
The city of Benidorm on the Costa Blanca had 25.8 litres per square metre of rainfall yesterday, Sunday October 17. Of that, 15.2 litres/m2 fell in just one hour. That’s two litres/m2 more than is usual in the whole month of October, all concentrated in a single day.
Over the last couple of weeks, Benidorm has seen more rain than normal for this time of year. Last weekend, a downpour of water caused flooding on Levante Beach.
The forecast for Alicante this week remains cloudy with partial showers interspersed with periods of sunshine, with the weather clearing up as we head into Wednesday and Thursday. More downpours like yesterday’s in Benidorm are not expected for the rest of this week.
Today, Monday October 18, daytime temperatures are set to rise across the board in Spain, and may exceed 30 degrees in the Canary Islands. On the other side of the country, up near the south of Catalonia and around the Balearic Islands, there will be cloudy intervals with possible heavy showers in some parts.
