ARCHIVED - Benidorm barmen jailed for 6 years for selling cocaine at work
A third Costa Blanca waiter was acquitted due to lack of evidence
The Provincial Court of Alicante has sentenced two Benidorm barmen to six years and one day in prison for a crime against public health which involved selling narcotics over the counter of the premises they both worked in. They each will also have to pay a fine of 1,500 euros.
A third waiter believed to have been involved was acquitted due to lack of evidence but this may still be appealed before the Superior Court.
The drug dealers operated from the Costa Blanca bar between October 2015 and May 2016 and the National Police quickly set up a surveillance system when they noticed unusual activity at the premises. According to official sources, it was common for people to come and go throughout the day, but only stay for a couple of minutes.
When the fleeting patrons were searched, more often than not packages of cocaine were discovered on their person. Officers also tapped the phones of the two suspects and discovered that they used code words and phrases for different narcotics, doses and prices to cover their tracks.
Venues like bars and stores are becoming increasingly common drug outlets in Alicante and in April, the owner of a candy kiosk in the north of the city was arrested for selling narcotics from his shop.
The following month, seven people were nabbed in Torrevieja for running a drug home-delivery service from their bar. The narcotics were reportedly stored in the kitchen of the premises and customers could phone in their cocaine order, which would then be delivered in Tupperware containers.
