ARCHIVED - August 7 Esparto grass weaving fiesta in Aguilas
Witness first-hand this amazing tradition, from 7pm on Sunday August 7
The town of Águilas is well known for its historical tradition of weaving using the local ‘Esparto’ grass. This activity has formed a cornerstone of the Águilas economy for centuries, and now is kept alive thanks to the Esparto grass museum and the annual Esparto Day.
This year, on Sunday August 7, Águilas is celebrating the 9th Annual Fiesta del Esparto cultural event in the Plaza de España.
The festival starts at 7pm with a welcome ceremony, after which there will be a demonstration of the art of weaving with Esparto grass by talented craftspeople from Torre Pacheco, Lorca and, of course, Águilas.
There will also be an exhibition of works by retired professional Esparto weavers Bernardo and the “Moris”.
At 8pm, there will be a ceremony to present plaques to Esparto enthusiast Gabriel Muñiz Buendía, and posthumous awards to José Calvo Robles and Salvador Martínez Cegarra.
Finally, at 9pm, there will be a get-together of the famous Mussonas from the Águilas Carnival.
As well as all the events taking place on this day, there will be explanatory signs about the history, culture and tradition of Esparto weaving on display in the Plaza de España from August 6 to 10, for anyone who doesn’t yet know about this incredible activity.
