ARCHIVED - August 5 and 6 Traditional journey from Murcia to Los Alcazares commemorates early tourism in the Mar Menor
The Ruta de la Huerta al Mar is an overnight journey by horse and cart from the regional capital of Murcia to the Costa Cálida
In times gone by the traditional summer season in and around the city of Murcia took place in the middle of August, when the inhabitants of the area in and around the regional capital escaped the heat of the height of summer and made their way to Los Alcázares, on the shore of the Mar Menor.
In memory of those early days of tourism in the Costa Cálida, this year the “Ruta de la Huerta al Mar” is being held for the 23rd time on August 5 and 6, with around 30 horse-and-carriage or horse-and-cart combinations leaving from the city of Murcia on the Friday at 18.00 and reaching Los Alcázares on Saturday morning after journeying all night.
Mario Pérez, Cervera, the Mayor of Los Alcázares, explains that the municipality is delighted to continue the tradition, albeit only in a symbolic way, and he himself will be taking part in the event alongside Councillor José Carlos Castejón.
The route begins at 18.00 on Friday August 5 in the car park of the Auditorio Víctor Villegas in Murcia and passes through numerous towns and villages (including Los Dolores, San José de la Montaña, El Garruchal, La Tercia, Balsicas, Dolores de Pacheco and Roda) before reaching Los Alcázares at approximately 10.00 the following morning. The final stretch runs from Roda to Los Alcázares along Avendia Marqués de Rozalejo, Avenida Constitución, Carril de las Palmeras, the seafront, the Iglesia de la Asunción and the Town Hall, and begigns at 9.30 on Saturday morning.
