ARCHIVED - Artists impression of new 2.5km bike lane along Elche bridge
Work has begun on the creation of a cycle lane over Generalitat bridge in the Baix Vinalopo municipality, Alicante
An impressive artist's impression shows the transformation earmarked for Generalitat bridge in Elche with the creation of a 2.5km bike lane that will run along Pere Joan Perpinyà, across the bridge itself, and onto calles Mariano Soler Olmos and Teulada.
The "important step towards making Elche a greener, healthier and more cyclist-friendly city" will connect with the current cycle lanes of Alcalde Ramón Pastor and Magraner, in the La Asunción secondary school area, and involve roundabout adaptations at Raval and Portes Encarnades.
"In this way we are making an important leap forward in the cycling network and placing Elche on a par with other Spanish and European cities which are a benchmark in terms of cycling mobility," explained councillor for the area, Esther Díez.
She assured that "the works will not only create a safe infrastructure segregated from traffic, but will also benefit the residents as a whole because with these lanes we will reduce the flow of vehicles and reduce speed, a constant demand in these neighbourhoods".
Work on the 322,000-euro cycle lane, of which 50% is European funding, began on Tuesday May 24 and is expected to take up to five months.
In addition, the town council has begun constructing a bike lane in Avenida de Alicante.
"Elche deserves to be a transforming and sustainable city to match the best standards of other towns and cities. Today we are achieving this with these green policies, actions that are moving towards the Elx2030 objective of sustainability," added Díez.
