ARCHIVED - Arrests in Alicante and Callosa de Segura for human trafficking and labour exploitation
Workers in the Vega Baja town and province capital slaved for 16 hours for 10 euros a day
Three people have been arrested in Alicante and Callosa del Segura in different police operations accused of crimes against workers' rights, exploiting illegal immigration and trafficking for labour.
The bosses were found to have employed several immigrants in working conditions far below legal standards, abusing their situation of vulnerability, and taking advantage of the fact they don't speak Spanish and were unaware of their rights.
The workers didn't have contracts, accident insurance or residence and in one of the cases, some slaved for 16 hours for 10 euros a day.
Officers from Group III of the Unit Against Illegal Immigration Networks and Documentary Falsifications of the Provincial Brigade of Foreigners and Borders of Alicante launched an investigation into the two companies last month.
At the business in Alicante, a car wash, detectives discovered six workers, five of whom were foreigners, two of them in "an irregular situation". The owner of the company allegedly forced all of them to work seven days a week, paying them just four euros an hour.
At the second unrelated company in Callosa del Segura, involved in harvesting and distributing vegetables, the police located 16 workers, all of them foreign nationals and nine of them in an irregular situation, who were employed to peel onions from 6am until 10pm for an average of 1.6 euros an hour.
The investigation is ongoing.
