ARCHIVED - Tangerines cause long tailbacks on the A-31 Madrid-Alicante motorway
A crash involving four vehicles caused an 8 km traffic jam lasting 4 hours
An accident on the A-31 towards Madrid-Alicante caused an 8-kilometre traffic jam which lasted for around four hours. The crash involved a car and three trucks, one of which was transporting tangerines, forcing the fire department and road maintenance services to work together to clear the motorway and reopen the road.
The traffic accident happened during the lunchtime rush hour at about 2 pm, and resulted in a truck being overturned, scattering tangerines across the road. In consequence, the motorway was closed for around four hours until the authorities were able to remove all of the fruit.
No casualties have been reported, but the accident did inconvenience a large number of people as the incident caused vehicles to queue up for hours on the A-31 close to the Levantina industrial estate in Novelda, and the Guirney area of Petrer.
The Traffic department of the Guardia Civil diverted traffic through Elda by the Ronda Sur towards Monóvar and from there along the road that connects with Novelda, to then rejoin the A-31. The authorities were not able to reopen the motorway fully until 6.20 pm.
