ARCHIVED - Surge in violent brawls and burglaries in Javea prompts police warning
A fight involving 20 people armed with knives and screwdrivers broke out in Javea in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province at the weekend
Several police unions are backing a warning from Javea Local Police over a worrying rise in violent street fights, burglaries, theft and graffiti.
On Sunday May 8, police were forced to break up two brutal clashes, one of which involved up to 20 people armed with knives, screwdrivers and machetes on Plaza de la Constitución.
A statement signed by the police unions SPPLB, SIPOL, STAS and SEP, claims that in addition to an increase in street fights, burglaries and traffic accidents have also risen, and there's been an uptick in drug-related offences.
The police report states that "last weekend was particularly serious", and "saturated" patrols had to deal with "several assaults on public roads and in broad daylight: in one of them, the occupants of a vehicle beat up a pedestrian".
Following the "huge" street brawl that "stunned members of the public witnessed", two minors had to be treated for serious stab wounds.
Over the weekend there was also a traffic accident in which a vehicle, after colliding with street furniture, circulated through several streets of the town causing "serious damage" until the driver was forced to stop after a further crash.
"We do everything in our power," said Javea Local Police, "but with the current labour situation prevailing within the institution", many officers are transferring to other municipalities where they feel "their professionalism is valued", leading to a shortage of police presence in the coastal town.
According to the unions, three officers have recently left and "other departures are pending".
"For all these reasons, the current scenario faced by the Local Police has led to an alarming increase in insecurity and it's the residents who suffer," the statement concluded.
