ARCHIVED - Newly restored coastal pathway in Calpe awarded Blue Trail Distinction
A 23,000-euro refurbishment project at Voramar Calalga pathway in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province, was completed last week
Calpe's coastline pathway Voramar Calalga has been awarded a Blue Trail Distinction (Sendero Azul) by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) for its natural, cultural and educational value.
The national award recognises the recovery and enhancement of important paths and itineraries throughout Spain, which have been transformed into "valuable resources for environmental activities and the enjoyment of nature in general".
A total of 86 Senderos Azules have been awarded this year, with eight new additions to the network, which now boasts 474km distributed across 19 regions in Spain.
The criteria focus on aspects such as the layout and typology of the trails, infrastructures and signposting, aspects linked to the environmental characterisation of the trails and their enhancement through environmental education activities.
The criteria also considers aspects related to public use and enjoyment, accessibility, user information on natural and cultural heritage and citizen participation.
In the case of Calpe, restoration of Voramar Calalga path at its access to the cove of Les Basetes after damage caused by storm Gloria was completed last week. Calpe Town Hall has invested around 23.000 euros in the refurbishment of several sections of the path that runs along the cliffs and coves from the beach of Calalga to Les Basetes, and new wooden railings will be replaced in the near future.
"This is one of the most beautiful and busiest paths in Calpe, so it is not surprising that it has received the award. Its refurbishment after the Gloria storm has taken longer than expected due to the need for authorisations and permits from other administrations, but today it is in perfect condition," explained Councillor for Beaches, Matías Torres.
The award will be presented on May 26 at the Blue Paths Flags Award Ceremony at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Madrid.
