ARCHIVED - Murcia and Aena agree on plan to relaunch Corvera airport
The improvements will not require any additional funds from the regional government in Murcia
The Minister of Development of Murcia has come to an agreement with airport operations company Aena to relaunch Corvera international airport – also known as the Juan de la Cierva airport – after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic decimated air travel for more than a year and a half. Murcia-Corvera airport was officially opened in January 2019 and replaced the base at San Javier, and the new agreement includes modifying the initial contract in light of the current economic situation.
Both parties have agreed that there is a climate of “total trust” in the negotiations, which are focused on the long-term recovery and economic growth of the airport. Moreover, the minister has insisted that both the municipality and Aena will guarantee the provision of top quality service to passengers without requiring any additional financial outlay by the regional government.
The local government authorised the adaptation of the Aena contract last May and this is the second milestone of the relaunch plan that began in December of last year, which required Murcia to contribute just 2.6 million euros following Spain’s state of alarm.
Among other aspects, the plan aims to recover air traffic by reducing or suspending fees until the economic scenario is more favourable. In addition, the amount initially invested in maintenance has been reviewed considering the limited uses of the airport to date, while healthcare services at the airport have been adapted to more accurately reflect the number of passengers and Aena’s overall quality standards.
