ARCHIVED - Married couple killed at pedestrian crossing in Torrevieja
The husband and wife were fatally hit by a "speeding" van in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
A married couple sustained fatal injuries after being hit by a van at a pedestrian crossing in Avenida Desiderio Rodríguez, Torrevieja, at around 9pm on Monday (August 24).
The driver of the vehicle was immediately arrested, and whilst the Frenchman tested negative for alcohol and drugs, he was allegedly driving at speed and didn't see the husband, 72, and wife, aged 69, as they stepped out onto the road.
The elderly Spanish couple from Madrid were both dragged about 20 metres by the Mercedes Vito van, and despite the efforts of Basic Life Support and SAMU medical teams, along with officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil, tragically died at the scene.
The detained driver, who was travelling with his wife and four children, faces two charges of reckless manslaughter.
