ARCHIVED - Job security for Torrevieja health personnel
Management of Torrevieja health department in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, will revert to the Regional Ministry of Health from October 15.
The Ministry of Health will assume direct management of the Torrevieja health department when the private contract with Ribera Salud ends in October, ending months of uncertainty for 1,400 staff concerned about their future employment.
Ana Barceló, Valencia region's health minister, met with representatives of Torrevieja Hospital Works Committee on Thursday, June 24, to outline the plans having "listened and taken into account their concerns" over job security and patient care.
"The primary objective is to provide quality care to the population...the most important thing is that residents are perfectly served through a portfolio of quality services," she said after assuring that proposals to create a public company to manage the department have been shelved.
The committee has welcomed the news, which will mean the department's 1,400 health personnel across the Torrevieja health district will be given permanent contracts, and employment stability.
The move has now prompted calls for "reversions" in other health departments in Alicante province that are still privatised, such as Elche Vinalopo, Denia and Manises.
