ARCHIVED - Javea residents overrun with raucous roosters and cackling hens
Residents in the Marina Alta town claim dozens of poultry are roaming free and causing a 'daily nuisance'
Residents in a Javea neighbourhood are spitting feathers over a growing number of noisy hens and roosters roaming free and causing a "daily nuisance".
Dozens of poultry have reportedly been fouling in the streets and "cackling" day and night for several months, and there are fears they could cause a road traffic accident.
According to residents, the birds belong to a "squatter" living in a property on an open plot in the centre of the town, but roam freely in the vicinity of Plaza Montserrat Caballé, between Avenida del Botànic Cabanilles and Calle de Raimon.
"The hens and roosters start crowing and cackling all hours of the day, causing a great nuisance at night and in the early hours of the morning, meaning residents get no rest", said one homeowner in the area, adding that, "as they are often in the middle of the road, vehicles are constantly having to brake hard to avoid them".
The fed-up residents have joined forces and complained to the town council, demanding a solution. But they claim the problem is aggravated by the fact that the "supposed owner of the animals is squatting".
This has been confirmed by the Town Hall's Department of Services which has drawn up a report for the police for the removal of the animals.
The local authority admits the "process is delayed due to the squatting", but all attempts "will be made to put an end to this problem as soon as possible".
