ARCHIVED - Hit and run at Torrevieja pedestrian crossing where couple were killed 24 hours earlier
Police in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, are trying to trace the driver who failed to stop
Hours after a retired Madrid couple were fatally hit by a speeding van, a pedestrian was struck by a car at the same pedestrian crossing in Torrevieja, with police now trying to trace the hit-and-run driver.
A man, 72, and his wife, 69, sustained fatal injuries after being hit by a van at the pedestrian crossing in Avenida Desiderio Rodríguez on Monday night (August 24).
The French driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs, but was allegedly driving at speed and arrested at the scene. He has since been released pending a court appearance.
Police are now investigating a second incident, which occurred the following evening, at around 11pm, in which a pedestrian was seriously injured after being run over at the same crossing.
The victim suffered rib injuries "due to the impact of the vehicle" and was stablised at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital.
The driver, however, failed to stop, and Torrevieja Local Police are carrying out inquiries to try to locate the motorist.
To try to improve pedestrian safety at the crossing, the council's highways department was pictured installing speed bumps either side of the crossing on the four-lane stretch of road on Wednesday, August 25, close to a supermarket.
The road safety measures had reportedly been removed ahead of the Cycle Tour of Spain (Vuelta Ciclista a España) which passed through Torrevieja at the weekend.
But locals have this week taken to social media to call for traffic lights at the crossing, warning the safety of pedestrians is continually put at risk by speeding drivers on the busy stretch of road.
