ARCHIVED - Fines for speeding reach six year high in Alicante province
62,786 speeding fines were issued in Alicante province on the Costa Blanca in 2020.
The number of speeding fines issued in Alicante province reached a six-year high in 2020, with 62,786 motorists penalised for exceeding limits, according to data released by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT).
On the flip side, fines for ITV or drunk driving were down, possibly due to the curfews and mobility restrictions, with 1,238 complaints over alcohol consumption - significantly less than previous annual average of 3,000.
Throughout last year, a total of 146,381 traffic fines were imposed in Alicante province, of which 62,786 were for speeding, with offenders captured on fixed radars.
The latter figure is the highest recorded since at least 2015, and an increase of 4.25 per cent compared to 2019, while the total number of sanctions actually fell by 5.51 per cent.
This means that speed camera fines jumped from 38.88 per cent of traffic sanctions to 42.89 per cent.
However, it would appear that increased police presence due to the pandemic did have an impact on the number of motorists caught exceeding limits on mobile radars in 2020, with 11.5 per cent less tickets issued (24,433) compared to the previous year.
But when added to those captured on fixed radars, the number of speeding fines rises to 59.6 per cent of all traffic fines issued, making it the main reason for motoring sanctions in the province.
As revealed last month, the speed camera which generated the most income for the DGT is located at kilometre 141 on the N-332 in Villajoyosa, where the limit is 90 Kmph, with 14,581 fines.
In second place on the list of the radars with the most penalties in 2020 is a camera located at the north entrance of the San Juan tunnel, on the A-70, which captured 13,730 infractions.
Curiously, the radar at the south entrance of the tunnel barely registered 3,700 offences.
The previous two account for 45 per cent of all speeding fines imposed from a fixed radar in the province, and are among the top 50 DGT earners in Spain.
