ARCHIVED - Cold snap carries winter weather to Alicante
Alicante waves goodbye to the warmest winter in a decade
After an unseasonably warm Christmas and New Year, Alicante is sadly set to return to frigid temperatures during the first full week of 2022 with the onset of an icy front travelling to Spain from northern Europe. This meteorological phenomenon will cause a dramatic drop in temperature of up to eight degrees on Wednesday January 5 according to Aemet.
On the coast, temperatures are set to drop to just a degree or two above zero at night, and will not rise above 14º even at the height of the afternoon, while further inland, the frosts will reappear and the mercury will stick at a decidedly chilly 10 degrees.
Moreover, a polar trough set to sweep through Spain from Tuesday is set to bring increased rainfall to the Community of Valencia. The cold front is expected to completely clear away the fog of the last few days and is forecast to last until Sunday, when the anticyclone will return.
This forecast is a far cry from that of the previous few days, when Alicante experienced the warmest winter in a decade.
“The entry of very warm tropical maritime air, a product of climate change, makes it possible for winters to be milder each year and to accelerate their spring character with temperatures more typical of late April, not December or early January,” according to Jorge Olcine, director of the Laboratory of Climatology at the University of Alicante.
So far this year, Aemet has reported that the temperatures in Alicante have been 0.4 degrees higher than normal, while rainfall at the end of 2021 was actually 1% more than usual.
La masa de aire anormalmente cálido que nos afecta estos días dará paso al aire polar, que provocará un importante descenso térmico.
