ARCHIVED - Botellon drinking sessions to become a serious offence in the Valencia region
Alcohol sales will be prohibited after 8pm to prevent street drinking in the region's three provinces, including Alicante.
A decree on nuisance botellones (street drinking sessions) is to be modified so that the anti-social gatherings will be classified as a "serious offence" as part of the Valencia regional government's bid to combat the continued spread of coronavirus, with possible fines of up to €30,000.
As well as being a problem for police patrollng the streets at night, the botellones are also a source of upset for residents living in many neighbourhoods, and a real concern for the government as the surge in cases is more prevalent amongst young adults, who are largely unvaccinated.
The change in the law will be approved at a plenary session on Friday, July 9, and has been announced alongside a ban on selling alcohol after 8pm - one of a string of tighter restrictions which come into place at 00.01 on Saturday, July 10, to try to curb soaring infections across the region.
