ARCHIVED - Animal welfare group warns of cat poisonings in Orihuela
Colonias Felinas Orihuela has shared distressing images of several dead cats believed to have been killed on Montepinar urbanisation in the Vega Baja town
Warning: some of the images contained in this report are of a graphic nature and may be disturbing to some readers.
Cat welfare volunteer group Colonias Felinas Orihuela has publicly denounced the recent deaths of several cats on Montepinar urbanisation, all of which it claims appear to have been poisoned.
On Tuesday February 8, the group shared a number of distressing photographs of animals they suspect have been deliberately targeted, which some may find upsetting, and have passed the details to the Guardia Civil's environmental unit, Seprona, to investigate the possible killings.
However, according to Colonias Felinas, the distraught pet owners have no idea if or what kind of investigation is being undertaken as "no necropsy has been carried out on these animals to determine the cause of death", and add that "this is totally necessary and obligatory" if the facts are to be clarified.
Colonias Felinas is also warning that anyone who, without being legally authorised, "uses poison, explosives or other instruments of similar destructive or non-selective efficacy for hunting or fishing" faces a prison sentence of four months to two years.
Offenders may also be banned from hunting or fishing for up to three years.
