ARCHIVED - Alicante records wettest May day in 74 years
Torrential rains lashed the province on Sunday, May 23, with 53.8 litres per sqm recorded - the highest since May 13, 1947.
Sunday was a day of storms, the formation of a DANA (an isolated high altitude depression) affecting south-eastern Spain, with the whole of Murcia, the province of Alicante and Almería, and parts of Albacete and Granada all on alert for heavy rains.
It's not normal for this type of heavy storm to occur on our coastline at this time of year, as this type of storm condition normally only occurs during the autumn, but the Mediterranean is warmer than normal and the high temperatures of the last few days helped to create correct conditions for these rains.
The result was a day of record rainfall in both Murcia and Alicante province. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) 70.6 litres/m2 fell in just 16 hours in the Alicante municipality of L'Atzúbia, the highest rainfall figure for this month since May 13, 1947.
Pinoso was hammered with 64 litres/ m2 followed by Rojales (61.2), Alicante-Elche airport (61); Barx (60); Novelda (58.4); Alicante (53.8); Agrés (53.6); Villalonga ()52.8); Elche (51.8); Alcoy (50) and Orihuela (46.6).

The heavy rain didn't come as too much of a surprise as Aemet had issued a yellow alert warning for the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida on Friday, May 21.
