ARCHIVED - 6 inmates of Alicante Villena prison escape from cells for a game of cards
The incident raised concerns over the growing level of insecurity in Spanish prisons
The Professional Association of Penitentiary Workers, also known as TAMPM, have reiterated their concerns about the security issues faced by prison workers in Spain after 6 inmates escaped their cells to play cards in Villena prison, located in the province of Alicante.
In the early hours of Monday (April 5), the inmates, aged between 18 and 21, forced the locks on their cell doors using picks made out of plastic cutlery and met in a predetermined area to play card games and the board game ludo, as well as to place bets.
One of the young criminals was seen walking around on the prison’s camera system by the officer on duty, who was alone at the time.
The officer then raised the alarm and called for reinforcements. The prison staff quickly realized that more inmates were missing from their cells and undertook a search in order to locate them.
The TAMPM Association, whose acronym stands for “your abandon could kill me”, continues to highlight the growing issue of insecurity in prisons and the dangers that prison staff face. The Association have also emphasized the irony of the incident in Villena prison, as it is considered one of the safest in the country.
