ARCHIVED - Andalusia to vaccinate 5-11-year-olds by end of October
Coronavirus vaccination programme will be rolled out in primary schools in southern Spain
The government of Andalucía plans to start vaccinating children aged between 5 and 11 at the end of October, announced the region’s Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre. The initial plan is to send medical professionals to schools to administer the Covid vaccines directly.
Now that 76.4% of the Spanish population have been fully vaccinated, the highest cumulative rate is among children under 12 years old at 94 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Andalucía in the last fortnight.
Andalucía has already begun to give third doses of the vaccine to elderly in old people’s homes, and are now starting to think about moving on to first jabs for the youngest members of society before the end of next month.
It is not yet known which vaccine will be given to the under-12s in Andalucía, but Spain may follow the lead of Australia where the Pfizer vaccine is awaiting approval for use in this age group. Pfizer is already the preferred choice when vaccinating 12- to 18-year-olds.
