ARCHIVED - Andalucia to administer third coronavirus vaccine this week
The booster Covid jab will be rolled out in nursing homes in Andalusia from Tuesday September 21
Following an announcement by the central Spanish government on Thursday September 16 that a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine would be rolled out to certain vulnerable groups as soon as possible, the Junta de Andalucía has confirmed that a third vaccination will be administered to people living in nursing homes beginning on Tuesday September 21.
The initial thought was that the Ministry of Health would hold off on the booster jabs to coincide with the flu vaccination season at the end of October, but the regional minister, Jesus Aguirre, insisted on Friday that waiting another few weeks was foolish considering that Spain currently has a surplus of doses available.
Furthermore, Mr Aguirre pointed out that, even though the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is coming under control in Andalucía, those over 85 years continue to have one of the highest cumulative incidence rates, despite being double jabbed.
The booster dose will be administered to some 49,000 nursing home residents, along with people whose immune systems are compromised, such as those undergoing chemotherapy or individuals over the age of 40 with Down Syndrome. The minister is confident that with the third jab, incidence rates among the most vulnerable populations should begin to decrease, but that an antibody study will be conducted to establish its effectiveness.
In the past few weeks the vaccination rate has slowed down considerably as more than 75% of the population is now double jabbed, meaning that a surplus of AstraZeneca and Janssen doses will be collected from the autonomous communities and sent to developing countries. Mr Aguirre explained that the refrigeration requirements of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines means that sending them to poorer nations is not practical, but assured that the extra doses will be used in Spain before they expire.
