ARCHIVED - Alicante unveils its record-breaking giant nativity scene
The nativity features in the Guinness World Records due to its gigantic size and will be on display in Alicante city until January 6
Alicante Council has once again unveiled its monumental nativity scene, the biggest in the world at a whopping 18-metres high.
The nativity, called 'Sagrada Familia', features in the Guinness World Records and will be on display with music and lighting until midnight on January 6, following the Three Kings holiday.
Originally located in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square), the figures of Joseph, the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus have now been relocated to Alicante promenade at the Rambla de Méndez Núñez junction.
"The nativity has become a new promotional image for Alicante, attracts visitors and contributes to the revival of the tourism and hospitality sectors which have suffered the most during the pandemic," said Alicante Mayor, Luis Barcala, at the unveiling on Friday November 26.
"As well as the monuments, visitors can enjoy the palm trees along the Paseo de la Explanada with the port, pleasure boats and the Mediterranean Sea in the background," he added.
The figure of Joseph is an incredible 18 metres tall, with the Virgin Mary standing at 10.46 metres and baby Jesus 3.25 metres.
Created by local artist José María García 'Pachi' the nativity structure, which weighs a ton, is made of iron tubing gas welded together "for added strength and to avoid imperfections" with self-locking screws that, once tightened, cannot be loosened.
The three figures have been coated with a chemical flame retardant to protect them against the weather and potential vandalism.
"The Monumental Nativity Scene 'Sagrada Familia' is based on the Alicante Modernism of the early 20th century, and takes as a reference the sculptors Vicente and Daniel Bañuls," added the local authority.
