ARCHIVED - Alicante airport included in elite 5-star Covid ratings
Only 17 airports in the world are in the top category including Alicante-Elche and five others in Spain
The airport of Alicante-Elche in El Altet is among six in Spain to have been awarded the maximum 5-star Covid-19 rating by the air travel consultancy Skytrax, following a survey of over 550 airports and 525 airlines all over the world.
Only 17 airports in the whole world have been given a 5-star rating by Skytrax, but six of them are in Spain: apart from Alicante-Elche, the others are Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de la Laguna. Elsewhere in Europe only Malta International and Roma-Fiumiccino are included in the elite group, although 4-star certification has been given to many more in Europe including Edinburgh airport and London Heathrow.
The ratings are calculated using 175 criteria regarding the reduction of risks associated with the Covid pandemic and the well-being of travellers while inside airport facilities. The criteria include signage, Access restrictions, Covid testing facilities, social distancing protocols, public health controls, ventilation and many others, and it is reported that the Spanish airports in the 5-star category scored particularly strongly in the categories of access restrictions, health checks, VIP lounge protocols and clarity of communication.
Skytrax has published “airport Covid-19 ratings”, naming only also 11 airlines in the 5-star category (including airBaltic and Air France in Europe). European low-cost airlines Easyjet and Ryanair are both awarded 4 stars.
