ARCHIVED - Alicante town Alfaz del Pi offers to host Afghan refugees
The municipality in the Marina Baixa also intends to appeal to the international community to “preserve lives of women and children”
Given the humanitarian crisis facing Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover last month, Alfaz del Pi Council is offering to act as a host municipality for Afghan refugees, particularly women and children.
The Department of Residents of Other Nationalities and Equality is preparing to put its proposal to the Spanish Government, “to ensure the defence of human rights and equality”.
“The aim is to collaborate to the best of our means and abilities so that the international community does not abandon the Afghan people, and ensure solutions are sought to not violate the most basic rights and freedoms of citizenship,” stressed the local authority.
Spokesman, councillor Toni Such, added that a major concern is the “situation in which women and girls have been left in Afghanistan”, and the council will appeal in its address to the central government for the international community to “take action to preserve their lives”.
Elsewhere in the Valencia region on the Costa Blanca, the Universitat de Valencia is leading a support program to incorporate Afghan female students and professors into Spanish faculties.
