ARCHIVED - Alicante city centre is opened up to pedestrians on Sundays in pilot scheme
Alicante city centre in the Community of Valencia on the Costa Blanca will be closed to traffic on Sundays and fiestas throughout May and June.
Alicante city council has decided to repeat the successful experiment carried out during the covid pandemic over the festive season and will trial the closure of the city centre to traffic during May and June.
The aim of the pilot scheme, which is being trialled ahead of summer, is to open up more spaces to pedestrians and promote sustainable mobility.
Sunday, May 9, the first day of the city council's new scheme, saw the La Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Calle Rafael Altamira and La Rambla Méndez Núñez closed to traffic from 11am to 9pm, closures which will be repeated in the coming weeks.
And the move appears to have been well-received, with the public enjoying car-free streets opened up for walking and even sports while being able to social distance.
If all goes well, the scheme will be extended into the summer months in a bid to improve pedestrian safety and "promote tourism in a sustainable city".
The long term goal is to create more green spaces, introduce traffic calming and "improve the quality of life" for people living in the city.
The Local Police will supervise the closures on May 16, 23 and 30, and on June 6, 13, 23 and 23, along with a local holiday on June 24 and a regional holiday on the 27th.
And bus routes will be diverted.
