ARCHIVED - Aguilas City Council joins parents at Early Care Centre protest
Law changes have greatly increased the waiting list for this essential Águilas care facility
The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, along with the councillor for Social Policy and Education, joined parents and relatives in a protest outside the Palace of San Esteban de Murcia to demand changes to the Early Care law.
The Centre for Child Development and Early Care in Águilas has been providing essential services to children with disabilities and youngsters at risk since the 1980s but a change to the law last year has substantially increased waiting lists and has resulted in a delay in assessments for dozens of families.
As a result, the City Council has offered its support to parents and is rallying against the changes, which they believe fail to guarantee sufficient resources and staff to the community and threaten this fundamental service.
“They have imposed this rule on us without the economic resources necessary to care for these children. What they are going to achieve is that we have to refer them to private early care centres,” Mayor Carmen Moreno explained.
“In Águilas, we have 20 families on waiting lists unable to receive care. This is not just unfortunate, it is worrying, since they are children who, each day that goes by without being cared for is a day lost in their recovery.”
