ARCHIVED - Aguilas 2022 Carnival postponed until the summer due to high Covid incidence rate
Águilas Carnival is one of the most important in the Region of Murcia
The Town Hall in Águilas and the Federation of Peñas de Carnaval have made the difficult decision to postpone the 2022 Carnival until this summer due to the high incidence rate of coronavirus in the municipality.
Águilas Carnival is traditionally held 40 days before Easter, which usually falls some time in February, and the Águilas edition is the most important in the Region of Murcia, as well as being considered ‘of International Touristic Interest’.
However, due to the importance of the event, the organisers think that the Carnival deserves to be celebrated to the fullest extent and, therefore, hosting the festivities in February, with such a high number of Covid cases and strict restrictions, means that the event won’t be able to live up to expectations.
The 2021 Carnival was also postponed until the summer and then suspended once more due to the pandemic.
Although business owners, locals and visitors will now be looking forward to the summer to celebrate the long-awaited Carnival, the Mayor of Águilas reiterated that the final decision always depends on the epidemiological situation. Exact summer dates for the 2022 event are going to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
