Age Concern supports the over 50's in a multitude of ways.
Age Concern is the Mazarrón based section of Age Concern Spain. It operates across the Costa Cálida but its main activities are in Mazarrón and the surrounding area. Age Concern is a registered charity and voluntary organization. It provides help and support to the over fifties, along with a social life.
The organisation not only provides practical help, but also advice, and has a range of leaflets dealing with different issues and advice about accessing benefits, both Spanish and UK based. Attendance allowance, winter fuel allowance are both key issues for many and Age Concern has even been able to help some people with repatriation. The Spanish based UK population is growing older and although the Spanish health system takes great care of health, support is increasingly needed.
Age Concern does need your support. If you have the time, why not join them as a volunteer? Or become a friend? Age Concern needs help with its table top sales, coffee mornings, social lunches, social programme, with home visits. Support is there for our volunteers through an induction programme.
Currently over 25 volunteers visit and help in people’s homes. This can include activities such as sitting with a client whilst their carer/spouse shops, or undertaking domestic chores.
Age Concern Costa Cálida is a human charity managed and serviced wholly by unpaid volunteers. All services to the community are free, but they are not an emergency service, nor can they do caring, nursing or domestic work. Age Concern do not receive any funding from Spain or the UK. The costs are covered from fundraising activities and the generous donations from local residents. The phones are manned, during the times advertised, by working volunteers who cannot answer whilst driving, in meetings or with clients, but they will always return your call when able to do so. They have a range of medical aids which can be hired to assist after care and rehabilitation after operations and hospital stays.
Social events
Twice a month Age Concern runs a social event to enable local residents to meet new people within the community. Join their Facebook group for more information.
On the last Wednesday of the month Age Concern runs a Menu Del Dia at a local restaurant, also at 1.30pm, sometimes with entertainment provided. These Menus rotate around local restaurants, with something to suit every taste including British, Spanish or Chinese.
Age Concern also runs other fundraising events, including a bric a brac stall, with clothes, on Camposol B one Friday a month, and any contributions are always welcome.
