The access road to the Bolnuevo coves in Mazarrón will be closed for the next few weeks while work starts to improve safety and reduce damage caused by heavy rain in 2025.
The project covers a five-kilometre hiking track between Rincón de Bolnuevo and the hamlet of Cañada de Gallego, a well-known coastal route that runs along the edge of the Sierra de las Moreras and links a series of small coves and natural beaches. It is popular with walkers and cyclists and is also part of the EuroVelo network, as well as being recognised as a Blue Trail.
The works are being funded with €152,000 from the EU's Next Generation programme and form part of Mazarrón's tourism sustainability plan. They must be completed by June 30, 2026 due to the conditions attached to the funding.
The main focus is on the condition of the track itself, which has been damaged over time by rainwater running off the surrounding land during heavy downpours. The surface will be repaired and strengthened, and new drainage channels and water bars will be added to help move water off the track more effectively and reduce the kind of erosion that has affected it in recent years.
A new barrier will also be installed near Playa del Hondón to stop cars from continuing along the route. This is the same type of gate already in place at Rincón de Bolnuevo. Only authorised vehicles are allowed on this track, as it runs through a protected natural area made up of coastline, coves and stretches of unspoilt land.
Once the work is finished, some new signage will be put in place along the route to make sure it is safe.
The project is one of several in Mazarrón linked to EU funding that are now having to move quickly to meet deadlines, after delays earlier in the process caused by the need to get approvals from different authorities due to the environmental sensitivity of the area.
