ARCHIVED - 88-year-old woman drowns in Torrevieja: third beach casualty in two weeks
The elderly woman’s unconscious body was pulled from the sea at El Acequión in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
An elderly woman has drowned after being pulled unconscious from the water at El Acequión beach in Torrevieja, just two weeks after a tourist and her rescuer were engulfed in relentless waves and thrown against rocks before being swept out to sea at La Zorra cove.
Just before 2pm on Wednesday October 6, the Emergency Coordination Centre (CICU) was alerted that an 88-year-old woman, who was not responding, needed urgent assistance, and a SAMU ambulance and medical team was sent to the scene.
Sadly, they were unable to revive the elderly woman, and could only confirm her death. A post mortem will be carried to determine the cause of drowning.
Within minutes of the first emergency call, CICU assistance was requested following the rescue of a 57-year-old man who had almost drowned whilst swimming at Capitán cove in Orihuela, also in the Vega Baja.
A SAMU and a SVB unit were deployed and the victim was treated for symptoms of drowning before being taken to Torrevieja hospital in a basic life support ambulance.
