ARCHIVED - 52-year-old drowns on La Manga beach
Emergency services were unable to save the man from going into cardiorespiratory arrest on the beach this weekend
A 52-year-old man drowned on the beach of Las Amoladeras in La Manga del Mar Menor yesterday, Sunday July 31.
The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 Region of Murcia received a call at 2.55pm reporting that there was a person about 30 metres from the coast who could not get out of the water. Lifeguards from the Civil Protection of Cartagena, located in the Entremares area, rescued the person and proceeded to perform CPR.
Two rapid intervention vehicles with nurses from the Civil Protection of Cartagena, Civil Guard and Local Police patrols and a Mobile Emergency Unit from the 061 Emergency and Emergencies Department were also on the scene.
The rescuers managed to bring the victim out of cardiorespiratory arrest, but he later went into cardiorespiratory arrest again and the doctors of the Mobile Emergency Unit reported his death.
Drowning was the third leading cause of death due to external or accidental causes in Spain in 2020, claiming the lives of 406 people. Just the previous Sunday, an elderly woman died whilst bathing at the Castillicos beach in Santiago de la Ribera.
