ARCHIVED - 30 per cent of Murcia pharmacy Covid tests in January were positive
Murcia chemists have carried out around 40,000 Covid tests so far
Since pharmacies in the Region of Murcia began administering Covid tests, 6,150 positive cases have been detected, which represents around 15% of the 40,000 tests carried out by chemists.
In January, a record month for Covid cases in Murcia, around 19,000 tests were carried out, with 30%, (5,428 tests) showing a positive result. The president of the Official College of Pharmacists in the Region has highlighted the important part that pharmacy workers have played in controlling the sixth wave as the tests performed by chemists provided much-needed relief for overwhelmed medical centres.
Pharmacy staff have also helped members of the public correctly administer at-home tests by giving them instructions to ensure the sample is taken properly, as well as supervising self-administered tests in the pharmacy itself. These Covid tests have been especially useful in detecting asymptomatic cases of the virus.
In total, 204 chemists in the Region of Murcia are part of the health programme, which was established last July and allows tests to be carried out under the supervision of the pharmacist to guarantee their correct execution. The results are then transmitted to the Murcian Health Service and can be used to request sick leave for patients.
