ARCHIVED - 20 new Alzheimer cases diagnosed every day in Valencia region
4,828 people have been diagnosed with the disease in the region, including Alicante province, so far this year
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day (September 21), the Valencia’s Ministry of Health has released data which shows an average of 20 new cases of Alzheimer’s are diagnosed in the region every day.
So far this year, up to August 31, there have been 4,828 new cases, of which 1,709 are men and 3,119 are women.
Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease that affects memory and behaviour and currently affects at least 34,780 people in the Valencia region, the majority of whom (24,340) are women – a ratio of approximately seven women for every three men.
With regards to age, most new patients are over 65, according to the Ministry of Health, but around 10% of cases are classed as “early onset”.
“The onset of Alzheimer’s disease in people who are at the peak of their socio-occupational and family life produces a greater impact, if that is possible,” said the neurologist in charge of the Cognitive Disorders Unit at the Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe, Miquel Baquero.
“Even when the disease initially manifests itself as memory loss, some cases may present behavioural changes, language disorders, sensory recognition problems or changes in personal performance as the first symptoms. These symptoms, in addition to memory failure, are comparatively more frequent in the early stages in early onset cases,” added Baquero.
The neurologist explained that it is common for people who develop symptoms of the disease not to recognise or admit the decline in their abilities, and are therefore reluctant to consult a doctor.
“Bearing in mind that the loss of cognitive abilities does not always indicate the existence of Alzheimer's disease, there are currently diagnostic means to recognise or rule out the disease from its first symptoms with complete reliability and safety, which is especially useful in early cases.”
A breakdown of the healthcare data shows that there have been 67,120 consultations related to the pathology in health centres across the region this year. By provinces: 24,055 in Alicante; 35,477 in Valencia; and 7,588 in Castellón.
