ARCHIVED - 20 Covid-related deaths including a 36-year-old: Valencia region Covid update June 24
New coronavirus cases have spiked significantly in Alicante province and the rest of the Valencia region
The uptick in new cases continues in Alicante province with more than 4,800 new positives since the last update on Tuesday - 1,000 more than was recorded over the weekend.
Although there are fewer Covid patients on normal wards across the region, the number of seriously ill people has jumped from 31 to 37 since Tuesday.
And worryingly, the number of Covid-related deaths has remained in two figures over the last few weeks, with 20 reported over the last three days, including a 36-year-old man.

Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has confirmed 4,812 new cases since Tuesday June 21, significantly higher than the 3,853 reported three days ago (over a four-day period) and the 3,019 new cases confirmed a fortnight ago.
By provinces, 509 in Castellón (179,235 in total), 1,425 in Alicante (501,770 in total) and 2,878 in Valencia (782,824 in total).
Of these new cases, 2,085 are people over 60 years of age (a continued rise on the 1,834 reported on June 21, 1,522 on June 14 and 1,471 a fortnight ago): Of the new cases since Tuesday, 258 are registered in Castellón, 686 in Alicante and 1,141 in Valencia.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 702 Covid patients in hospitals across the Valencia region, three fewer than on Tuesday but 126 more than seven days ago, 37 of them in the ICU (six more): 95 in the province of Castellón, 4 in the ICU; 244 in the province of Alicante, 20 of them in the ICU; and 363 in the province of Valencia, 13 in the ICU.
Fatalities
20 deaths have been reported since Tuesday, all of which occurred within the last 15 days - 13 men aged between 36 and 99 years old and seven women aged between 80 and 97. This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 9,516: 1,121 in the province of Castellón, 3,614 in the province of Alicante and 4,781 in the province of Valencia.
