ARCHIVED - 180,000 extra Covid vaccine doses on the way to the region of Valencia
The Ministry of Health compensates for a deficit after recalculating distribution percentages
The Valencia government is awaiting another 100,000 doses to make up for jabs given to non-residents
Concern has been growing in various regions of Spain in recent weeks over a recurrence of shortages in coronavirus vaccine supplies which has led to first dose vaccination appointments being suspended in Madrid due to a lack of phials containing the Pfizer product.
However, the national government has announced that it is to compensate for the shortfalls to some extent through a re-calculation of the way in which supplies reaching Spain are apportioned to the different regions, taking into account data related to the whole population rather than only those in specific immunization target groups. This “balancing of the books” will result in an “extra” 136,000 doses being delivered to Madrid, 180,000 to the Comunidad Valenciana (where the government is also hoping for compensation for 100,000 injections given to non-residents) and 340,000 to Andalucía.
The extra deliveries will be made possible by a sharp increase in the number of Moderna vaccine doses reaching Spain. Already the weekly figures have been raised from 414,000 to 474,000, and in August it is expected that deliveries will double to around 900,000 per week.
