ARCHIVED - 16 irregular immigrants spotted off Alicante coast
The migrants have since been taken to the San Gabriel port in Alicante and are all said to be in good health
An immigrant boat with 16 passengers aboard was intercepted just a mile away from the port in Alicante on Saturday September 4.
The first reports of a patera (a small boat used by irregular immigrants) were registered early on Saturday morning and the emergency services began searching for the vessel.
Maritime Rescue services searched the area using one of their rescue boats, salvamar ‘Pollux’, while the Guardia Civil sent a ground unit to the coast, and a helicopter was also called in to assist the search party.
The patera was spotted by a fishing boat at 07:30 around a mile away from the San Gabriel port in Alicante and, by 09:00, the irregular migrants had been taken to the port for health checks and PCR tests, as is the protocol in these cases.
All 16 of the passengers were male and of Algerian nationality and six of them were underage. The emergency services have reported that they were all in good health and didn’t require medical attention.
Several migrant boats also arrived on the Costa del Sol, in Andalucía, and the Costa Cálida, in Murcia, over the weekend; over 300 irregular migrants in total.
