ARCHIVED - Man of the Sea statue in Torrevieja to undergo urgent repairs
The splendid sculpture is one of the landmarks of Torrevieja's coastline in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca of Alicante province.
Cracks have appeared at the base of the Man of the Sea (Hombre del Mar) located in one of the busiest promenades in the Torrevieja municipality, and scaffolding has been erected so that restoration work can begin.
The monument was inaugurated in 1975, but was originally located metres away at the junction of Avenida de la Libertad and Paseo de Juan Aparicio, and there are concerns it could have suffered damage when it was being moved.
The bronze statue now has pride of place in the Paseo Dique de Levante, a popular meeting place with benches, restaurants, bars and cafes, and is a tribute to mariners and the fishing tradition of the municipality.
To ensure it remains a focal point and an attraction on Torrevieja's coastline, a full sanitation program began yesterday, Thursday, May 27.
Once this is complete, the large cracks at the base of the statue, which can be seen with the naked eye, will be carefully restored.
