ARCHIVED - Arrests in Benidorm, El Campello and La Nucia as police shut down drug gang
Police have arrested six suspected drug gang members in Benidorm, El Campello and La Nucia in Alicante province.
Police have arrested the six members and the alleged 'leader' of a Lithuanian criminal organisation, who have been remanded into custody charged with drug trafficking, marijuana cultivation, money laundering and membership of a criminal group.
Following a two-month investigation, the Guardia Civil seized 15 kilos of marijuana buds, 1,500 plants in crops located in all three towns, seven-high end vehicles, €5,000 in cash, jewellery, 20 mobile phones and other devices.
According to the police, the alleged leader of the criminal gang, aged 37, was living "a lifestyle of a standard far higher than the others" in a luxury villa in nearby Altea.
During a search of his home, officers found designer clothes, high-end watches and expensive jewellery.
His uncle and 'right-hand man', who has a villa in neighbouring municipality, Calpe, is believed to have supervised the four marijuana "crop caretakers".
The operation, named 'American Film' was a collaboration between the Guardia Civil, Alicante and Torrevieja Citizen Security Units (Usecic), a Drug Detecting Canine Unit, Aerial Means Unit and Elche Local Police.
The joint investigation uncovered a plantation behind a hidden door at a property in La Nucia, in the basement of a house in Benidorm and on land at a rented rural villa in El Campello.
Following their arrests, all six were remanded into custody without bail.
